Working together to nurture lifelong learners

  1. Our Learning Centre
  2. The Careers and World of Work Programme

The Careers and World of Work programme at Hospital and Home Education Learning Centre

The Careers and World of Work programme aims to:

  • Prepare young people for adulthood with high aspirations for a fulfilling adult life
  • Help pupils to develop career awareness and enable them to manage personal career development
  • Enable pupils to manage transitions such as the change from school to college or work
  • Provide opportunities to experience the world of work
  • Enable pupils to handle careers information and assist them in making informed choices
  • Provide pathways suited to the needs of each young person based on their EHCP and future aspirations
  • Promote pupil and family choice
  • Provide opportunities to gain nationally recognised qualifications, where appropriate
  • Meet statutory requirements and guidance from DFE and embed the regional East Midlands Combined County Authority careers hub into whole school planning and learning

Delivered through:

  • Clear leadership roles & responsibilities within the school: Careers Leader (Jonathan Cutting), SLT strategic lead (Kerrie Fox) and Careers Link Governor (Roger Sandell)
  • Independent Careers advice and guidance through Futures: all students in Year 11 receive at least one 1:1 interview with a careers guidance advisor.
  • Objectives & activities linked to the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks

For pupils at HHELC who are dual-registered, we work together with the pupil's home school to ensure that they have the best possible careers offer. We collect the details of school careers lead's when they are put onto our roll so that we can liaise with them to ensure that, between us, we are offering a bespoke offer, aligned to the principles of the Gatsby benchmarks.

Implementation

Careers is addressed in PHSE lessons, and, where possible, in subject lessons as part of the wider curriculum.

Staff receive training on the Gatsby Benchmarks and incorporate careers conversations into their daily encounters with pupils.

We use a variety of resources, gathered in a ‘Careers Padlet’ https://padlet.com/jonathancutting/careers-resources-m773riyrl26wp2sq

to direct pupils, staff and parents to relevant and up-to-date local market information about courses and job opportunities.

The careers programme is tailored to meet the needs of individual pupils. Data and activities are tracked using Compass+.

Careers activities, such as career fair visits, workplace encounters and work experience, along with further and higher education encounters, take place throughout the year.

Pupils are supported to transition to their next stage, whether that be to further or higher education, apprenticeships, or the world of work.

All pupils in Year 11 are offered 1:1 personal guidance sessions with a qualified careers advisor.
